All Souls Day

Peter Schiller, a fifty-year-old priest in Germany, is at a crisis in his life.  Confused and haunted by visions of demons, stalked by the ghosts of tortured holocaust children, he breaks down with a loss of faith.

Confronted by this moral crisis, he takes a leave from the church and goes to visit his sister Lina in the German countryside.  Peter and Lina were raised in upstate New York by their tough German father, until his death forced them back to an aunt in Germany.

After leaving Lina, he decides to pursue the trail of a parishioner’s missing daughter.  This journey leads him to Magdeburg and Eva Reinhart, a young and beautiful gypsy witch..  Eva lives with her Aunt Paula, a woman whose intense icy sexuality and dominant presence, keeps Eva under Gypsy rule.  Her uncle, Papa Reinhart, is the charismatic and ruthless head of his gypsy clan.  He is corrupt and in collusion with the local police.  He is a warlock who is involved in baby trading, prostitution, and satanic ritual.  His views of loyalty  are paramount and he sees betrayal as a crime to be dealt with by and ancient and brutal code.

As Peter attempts to uncover the mystery of the girl’s disappearance, he begins to fall in love with Eva who desperately wants to break the bonds of her aunt and uncle.  This draws him into the dark world of witchcraft, unabashed sexuality, pagan ritual and ultimately human sacrifice.  He perilously skirts the borders of a sordid German underworld of decadent nightclubs and an array of strange and troubling characters. Everything he ever believed is put to the test, including his own soul.

The film culminates with Peter having to face his demonic tormentors and uncovering his father’s heinous ties to the holocaust and Nazi human experimentation.

Having discovered her aunt and uncle’s true Satanic and murderous natures, Eva betrays them to the authorities.  As Peter and Eva plan on leaving Germany for New York, fleeing their haunted pasts, her uncle is released by the corrupt police, and Eva must endure a savage and unspeakable attack by her uncle which will test not only her will to survive, but her own sanity and her relationship with Peter.

“All Souls Day” will be filmed primarily in English, with about ¼ of the scenes in German, and some brief passages in the Gypsy Romany tongue.

“Requiem”

Michael and Sophia have offered their marriage to God through a vow of celibacy. Devout Catholics, but with an idiosyncratic flair, their life of prayer and meditation begins to alter when Michael is confronted by doubts and a spiritual emptiness that goes to his core. Though Michael is a virgin, Sophia is a mystically inclined painter repenting her sexual past.

Michael, who works as a mechanic in an old garage in New York, is both drawn to and repulsed by the images of sexuality which fill the murky medieval landscape of 1990’s Manhattan. When Nat, a mysterious loner, enters the shop, they strike up a curious friendship. Their long talks touch on what lies at the heart of Michael’s being; religion, Christianity, the Catholic church, celibacy ó and “the dark night of the soul.” Amused and perplexed by their chaste practices, Nat stirs up trouble by questioning Michael and Sophia’s true intent and describing for them the finer points of tantric sex as a way to God.

Sophia and Michael hold their own sparring with Nat, but it hardly helps ease Michael’s spiritual tension. When Michael is at work , Nat’s discourse with Sophia continues alone in their apartment. He is unexpectedly affected by her vulnerability and open heart, and finds himself falling in love with her.

Haunted by visions and dreams which progressively become more real, Michael is pushed to his limit, in spite of Sophia’s love and support. After breaking their vow, and consummating their marriage, their course begins to take a dark and dangerous downward slide. Purging themselves with strange penances and becoming increasingly bizarre, they both cut their hair and begin to mortify their bodies. This culminates with Michael’s literal crucifixion by a god-obsessed gypsy girl who is looking for the touch of god in Michael’s sexual embrace.

Through a series of events, Michael and Sophia come to believe that they have been called by God to cleanse the Earth through a blood sacrifice, by murdering the creators of the kind of erotic advertising that tweaks and floods the minds of the malleable. As Sophia and Michael take turns slitting the throats of three advertising executives in a hunting cabin in Upstate New York, Sophia is killed and Michael wounded before the last drop of blood finally falls.

Two years later, his heart still heavy with grief and the burden of his sins, Michael, as if by providence, ends up on Native American land befriended by a strange Sioux elder. Half priest, half medicine man, and three-quarters trickster, this mystic grandfather opens Michael’s mind and heart to new possibilities and a new road. He begins to understand that his and Sophia’s spiritual excesses were expressions of the severity of their desperation, not unlike our own, to live a worthy life in a broken world.
